Ever wonder what, where, when, and why Mrs. Turner reads? So did these fifth grade interviewers! Read on to discover the answers to these questions and more.
Do you read?
I do. But I don’t read as much as I’d like to. I do read though. I learned it once in school.
What is your favorite language to read in?
Probably English.
What do you like to read to Ariya (Mrs. Turner’s 1 ½ year old)?
We usually let her pick what she wants to read. Some of my favorites that I like are Time for Bed (it’s kind of rhymey) and any books that have colors and numbers and letters so she can be learning about stuff while we are reading.
Which genres do you like to read?
I really like historical fiction and regular old fiction. I also like reading non-fiction books, for example, parenting books. There’s a historical fiction book called Fever that I read when I was teaching fifth grade that I really liked. I read it in about 2 hours because I couldn’t put it down. It’s written for little kids, kids about your age.
I’m a medium kid.
Yes, you’re right. It’s written for medium kids.
When do you like to read?
To be honest, it’s been awhile since I’ve done a lot of reading because when I get home from work we need to feed Ariya and get her ready for bed and then there are dishes and laundry and getting ready for the next day. I like to read more in the summer because I have more time then.
Do you have a favorite series?
The most recent series that I read that I really liked was the Hunger Games. I read that 3 or 4 years ago. I borrowed the books from my fifth graders because when they first came out, they all had them.
Who is your favorite author?
I'm not a big favorites person but I used to really like an author named Jodi Picoult. I read a ton of her books but that was awhile ago.
How often do you read?
I do read to Ariya every night or sometimes my husband does. But personally right now not very often. Ask me after this summer though. I’ll read more then. How many books do you think I should read this summer?
Twenty-five. Maybe twenty.
Okay, I’ll work on that.
Do you like reading out loud to a group or reading to yourself better?
I like either one. I like reading books out loud to students but I also like reading to myself.
What do you like to read on, a print book or some kind of e-Reader?
I like paper books better. We don’t have a Nook or anything like that but I have read stuff on my phone or on the computer. I just don’t enjoy that as much. I like to turn the pages and I have to say that I just prefer regular books.
Do you use the library?
I do. We just took Ariya a week ago and I lost my library card so they charged me a dollar to get a new one. They gave me one that’s regular card size and one for a key ring so I put one in my purse and one right in my wallet. Now I don’t think I’ll lose them.
Who is your favorite character? Do you think you are at all like him or her?
My favorite book when I was younger was Number the Stars. It was my all time favorite book and I read it about 25 times. So my favorite character is Annelise from that book. I don’t know if I’m like her. It would be pretty scary to help smuggle all those people to freedom, but I know I would want to help.
What do you like about reading?
I like learning new information and it’s just fun to relax and find out about what happens in a story or in the character’s lives. It's entertaining.
Do you like to watch movies based on books?
Sometimes I do. The only thing I don’t like is when they change the movie a lot from the book. So I usually read the book after I’ve seen the movie. Otherwise I watch the movie thinking “Oh, why did they make the character like that?” or “Why did they change the ending?” That can be very frustrating to me.
What do you get at the movie theater?
Candy.
What kind?
Any kind. But one time, I brought Chinese food in. We were really hungry and candy just wasn’t going to cut it.
Do you usually read in Spanish or English?
I usually read in English but I do have some Spanish books. Ariya has some Spanish books but we mostly read to her in English. We are focusing on having her learn English first.
What is the longest Spanish book you’ve ever read?
I don’t know. I’ll get back to you on that.
