Her book choices, of course! On May 12, Whitney, Claire, Elizabeth, and Aine had lunch with their fifth grade teacher and found out all about what she has been reading (including The False Prince, at left, which the fifth graders loved hearing read aloud this year).
What was the last book you read?
It was The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. It was really popular about a year ago and I’m finally getting around to reading it. It’s a weird mysterious book.
What are your favorite genres?
I like fantasy. I will admit that a little cheesy romantic book sneaks in there too, especially in the summer.
What is your favorite book?
Can I do a favorite book as an adult and one as a child?
Sure.
My favorite book as an adult is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. It’s really interesting because it’s about a crime that is committed and it is solved by a boy who has autism. To see his view is just very interesting.
As a kid the John Jakes North and South books totally sucked me in. They were historical, romantic, adventurous, and really wonderful. I remember being at the end of one of the books during study hall in high school and I was surrounded by other students and I was crying and I was thinking “don’t look at me.” It was just a super horrible, tragic moment in the book but it was so good too.
How many books have you read this school year?
Not as many as I’d like - maybe eight or nine. I wish I had time for more.
Who is your favorite book character
The first character that leaps to mind is Percy Jackson because I got drawn into those books so quickly.
Do you like to read aloud to a group?
Yes, because it’s fun. I love it when I can stop at a really suspenseful spot and you guys are saying “nooooo”. I just love to leave you hanging.
When do you like to read?
Sunday afternoons are probably my biggest reading time or before bed after I’ve harassed my kids to get into bed.
How often do you read?
In the summer it’s a lot more. During the school year it’s maybe 2-3 times a week, but not as much as I’d like.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like Rick Riordan because he’s funny and snarky and it’s very easy to get pulled in to his books. I also like Neil Gaiman. His books are dark and creepy and he does graphic novels too that are interesting, but maybe not something you want to read yet.
Why do you like to read?
I like getting sucked into a whole different place with different people that you wouldn’t normally see and get to know. With reading you can create the pictures in your head, but TV just shows it all to you. The pictures in your head are always better.
Thanks Mrs. Dysart!
