Did you know Mrs. Witta has been volunteering in the NDA Library from the beginning of its existence? An IHM parishioner, she wandered over to the school side in the summer of 2013 and offered to help in any way our new school needed. I quickly grabbed her up! Over that summer she helped me put the two libraries together and has worked in the library with me every Tuesday and Wednesday ever since. Thank you Mrs. Witta for everything you do for us and for sitting down to chat with these four fifth graders!
Do you like movies based on books?
Not really, because when I read a book I picture things a certain way in my mind. I kind of see the characters in my head and then the movie can be quite different. Sometimes they don’t even base the movie that much on the book and that can bother me. Now, Harry Potter is one movie that I did like. That was done well.
When do you like to read?
I like to read at night or in the summer sitting outside.
Who is your favorite author?
I like Mo Willems.
Illustrator?
That would be Mo Willems too.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book was a book that I read for the book club I’m in. It’s called The Swan Thieves. It was a mystery, but what I really liked was that it was very descriptive. The author described artwork in the most amazing way.
What is the last book that you read for your book club?
This time we are reading Call Me Zelda, which is about the wife of the author F. Scott Fitzgerald. We also just read the book that’s up there on the shelf called The Wright Brothers and that was very good. I’ve read several books by that author (David McCullough) and sometimes he includes almost too much description so I was a little unsure about reading this one. It turned out to be great though.
Did you have a favorite book when you were a child?
I liked The Boxcar Children. I liked the adventure. I loved that the kids liked to explore and how they found things at the the dump and made their home with those things.
Do you have a favorite series?
When I was a kid, I’d have to say it is The Boxcar Children series. For now, I like the Cork O’Connor books by William Kent Krueger.
Who is your favorite character and do you think you are at all like him or her?
I think my favorite characters are Jo in Little Women and Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice.
They are both spunky women and they knew what they wanted and they went after it. I’d say I am pretty much like them.
Do you like reading out loud to a group or do you prefer reading to yourself?
By myself. I like to read children’s book to children though. But as for adult books, I’d rather read to myself.
Do you have kids? Did you read to your kids a lot?
I can remember sitting in the rocking chair and reading to them from the time they were babies. I remember reading Winnie the Pooh in that rocking chair. I also read to my grandkids a lot. I have most of the Elephant and Piggie books and the Pigeon books and books from some of the authors who have visited here. My grandkids love it and it has helped them become good readers.
What do you like to read on, an eReader or a print book?
I do both. In bed I usually like the eReader because it lights up. But sometimes I like having a paper book. I just like the feel of the book in my hands and turning the pages.
What are your favorite genres?
Mostly fiction. I also do like mysteries. We have a lot of mystery series here but I don’t see a lot of kids checking those books out.
We are reading mystery books for our Literature Circles right now.
Oh, that's fun!
Where do you read?
In the living room, or I read in bed or sitting on the deck on the lake at our cabin.
Mrs. Witta’s turn to ask a question:
What’s your favorite book?
My favorite is the seventh Harry Potter.
I have a few: Ellie’s Story, Finding Zasha and Saving Zasha, Wonder and Esperanza Rising.
I like the Family Tree series. The books go from generation to generation.
Well, we aren’t finished with it yet, but so far The False Prince is really good and I liked Loot.
