Here's the scoop on NDA's Middle School Social Studies teacher, as uncovered by three inquisitive fifth graders . . .
Do you read? Homework doesn’t count.
Yes, a lot. Every single day.
Which genres do you like the most?
History, non-fiction. I always have a book going. I have it in my van or in my bag so I can just pick it up and read when I’m out.
Do you like movies based on books?
Yes. It’s always interesting to see how they do it. Who they choose for the cast and what they leave out.
Do you have any favorites?
The only ones that come to mind right now are the Stephen King ones. Those were good.
Have you read the Lemony Snicket series All the Wrong Questions?
No, I haven’t.
What is your favorite book?
It’s by a man named Michael Shaara and it’s called The Killer Angels. It’s historical fiction. Well it’s not actually fiction, because it’s true but it’s written like a story. It was written in 1973 I think and it won a lot of awards.
Do you like reading out loud to others or by yourself?
By myself. I like to wear headphones and listen to music while I read. I often get to school early and go to the coffee shop and just listen to music and read for about an hour.
When you were a kid did you read Henry & Mudge?
No, I never did.
It’s about a kid named Henry and a huge dog named Mudge and they go on adventures.
How often do you use the library?
Well, I use my local library quite a bit. About three times a week. I just go there to read a lot and don’t check out books so much. I buy a lot of books and I go read them there. It’s a nice walk to get there too.
Do you have a favorite series?
I really like the Jack Ryan series by Tom Clancy. The Hunt for Red October is one of them and we have it in this library.
Are you in a book club?
No.
Do you like poetry?
I do, but I’d rather write it than read it.
What do you like to read - a print book or on a device?
I just like to read a print book. I never really tried anything else. I like to write all over my books so that’s why I buy them. I write down thoughts and questions in the margins.
Do you donate your books to your library?
No, I keep them.
Do you have a favorite character?
Yes, Myron Bolitar, he’s a detective by Harlan Coban. The books are really funny.
Do you think you’re like him?
No, not really.
Who is your favorite author? Illustrator?
Well, I don’t have a favorite illustrator because most of the books I read don’t have pictures, but for an author it’s probably Harlan Coban. He writes books about missing people - books where somebody’s been missing for years and he tries to solve the case.
Where is your favorite place to read?
That would be the library or a coffee shop.
When do you like to read?
Any time, all the time, whenever I can!
If the world was ending and you could only have one book, what would it be?
Probably The Killer Angels because it’s so good and it’s long too.
Sometimes I like to read books because they’re classics and I think I should read them but I don’t usually end up loving them. They aren’t written for a modern audience so they move differently.
Do you like sad books?
No
Anything else that you’d like to add?
I think it’s wonderful that there are librarians today who inspire kids to read and help them find books. When I was growing up I didn’t have that and I never read a book from start to finish until I was 25. Somehow I made it through school without reading a whole book.*
Thank you Mr. Dopp!
* Note from Mrs. Maguire: I did not pay him to say that, but I am glad that Mr. Dopp loves to read now!
