The mystery and suspense are over . . . three fifth grade interviewers cracked the case on Mrs. Vance and found out what she loves to read: It's mystery and suspense, of course! Read on to find out more from their interview on February 25th.
What was the last book you read?
Insatiable Appetites by Stuart Woods. It’s a mystery and suspense book from the Stone Barrington series.
Which genres do you enjoy the most?
I really like mystery and suspense. There are a lot of good stories in those genres.
What do you like about reading?
I like reading because it’s relaxing and it doesn’t cost anything if you go to a library and check a book out. You can also do whatever works for your time frame - read for 5 minutes or for an hour.
What is your favorite book?
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. It’s a kids’ book that starts out a little slow, but then it gets going and it hooks you in and you can’t put the book down.
Did you have a favorite when you were a child?
I mainly read Peanuts comics when I was little. I didn’t read a whole lot when I was younger, I sort of grew into it as I got older.
Do you have a favorite series?
I have so many that I like, but I do really like the Found series (Margaret Peterson Haddix).
Who is your favorite author?
Hmmmm . . . For an author for kids, I like Lois Lowry. I’ve read many of her books . . . The Giver, Gathering Blue, Number the Stars. I would also say that John Grisham is a favorite.
How about a favorite illustrator?
Probably Eric Carle. He has a very neat way of putting different art pieces together.
Are you in a book club?
I’m not in a book club right now, however I do have a kind of book group that is a principals’ group that I read books for. It’s not a regular book club, it’s more focused on professional books for principals to read.
Do you like reading out loud to a group, or do you prefer reading to yourself?
I like reading out loud. It’s fun to do voices and you can be silly.
Who is your favorite character? Do you think you are at all like him or her?
My favorite character is probably Scarlett O’Hara I can be like her because I can be strong when I need to be but sometimes I’d just rather sit back and be kind of a girly girl.
Is that character from a true story?
No, it’s fiction. It’s from the book Gone with the Wind which is a very old book.
What do you like to read on - a regular book or an e-reader or a tablet?
A real book.
Do you like to go to movies based on books?
It depends. Sometimes I’m okay with the movies and think they are not bad but I always feel that the movies can’t quite depict the books as well. So if I’ve read a book, I don’t always go and see it as a movie.
I think my favorites are the Harry Potter movies. Those were done well.
Mrs. Vance’s turn to ask a question:
What are your favorite books?
Bennett: The Compound, that’s the one I’m reading right now.
Nadya: Belly Up.
Hannah: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Mrs. Vance: I like the Harry Potter book when Sirius Black comes in.
