Thanks to all of the parents and children who joined us, our NDA Early Literacy Night was an evening of fun and learning for all ages. Our Middle School volunteers kept the kids busy in the preschool room with lots of literacy-based play activities while their parents gathered in the kindergarten room to learn how they can support their child's literacy development at home. Everyone left with new books, courtesy of a grant from the Target Corporation. Thank you to Melissa Streit for helping us secure the grant! I also want to thank Hallie Keenan (our kindergarten teacher) and Shannon Amsler (our preschool teacher) for planning and presenting with me. Finally, I am grateful to parent volunteers Sarah Schwab and Teresa Mohabir and to our amazing Middle School volunteers (who now have a lot of little adoring fans!). This past week, students in Grades 1 & 2 had the opportunity to vote for the Star of the North Book Award while those in Grades 3-8 voted for the Maud Hart Lovelace Award (which is broken into Division 1 for 3rd-5th graders and Division II for 6th-8th graders). To be eligible to vote for the Star of the North, students had to have read at least 8 of the 10 picture book nominees. For Maud Hart Lovelace voting, students had to have read at least 3 of the 12 nominated books. I was pleased to see that so many of our NDA students met these requirements and were able to vote. Some felt strongly about their choice while others struggled to pick their favorite, but the votes are all counted and it's time to announce the school-wide winners . . .
In first place for the Star of the North Picture Book Award we have Moo!, written by Minnesota's own David LaRochelle. Belly Up took the top honors for the MHL Division I category and Cinder got the most votes for Division II. At the end of the month we'll find out which books from each category earned the statewide award and we'll get to see the nominees for the 2015-2016 school year. Stay tuned! |
