The winners of the Star of the North Award, Minnesota's student choice picture book award, were announced last week. I know that a lot of NDA students will be happy to see the books that won first, second, and third place!
At the same time the winners for 2016 were announced, the list of nominees for next year's award were revealed. Go to the Star of the North Nominees page to learn more about each of the titles listed in the poll below and then cast your vote for the nominee you are most excited about.

Over the weekend, the winners of the 2016 MHL Awards were announced at an event at the Red Balloon Bookshop in St. Paul. Here they are: Division I Division II The 2016-2017 nominees have been announced as well. Go check them out at the Maud Hart Lovelace website and comment with which one you are most excited to read!
One of the best parts of going back to school in January is that the wait to hear the announcement of the American Library Association's Youth Media Award winners is almost over. This year, the Caldecott, Newbery, and other ALA award winners will be revealed on the morning of January 11th. If you can't wait until then to get opinions on the best of the best children's and young adult books published in 2015, you might want to consult one of the lists below. The Washington Post list includes It's Only Stanley by Jon Agee, my favorite new picture book read-aloud of the fall. Can you find any of your favorites in these lists? Best Children's Books of 2015 from The Washington Post Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2015 from The New York Times NPR's Guide to 2015's Great Reads - This link brings you to the books on the list that are tagged as Kids' Books. If you'd like to see all books, just click "Clear Filters" on the left side of the screen. Hover over a book cover to read its review. This past week, students in Grades 1 & 2 had the opportunity to vote for the Star of the North Book Award while those in Grades 3-8 voted for the Maud Hart Lovelace Award (which is broken into Division 1 for 3rd-5th graders and Division II for 6th-8th graders). To be eligible to vote for the Star of the North, students had to have read at least 8 of the 10 picture book nominees. For Maud Hart Lovelace voting, students had to have read at least 3 of the 12 nominated books. I was pleased to see that so many of our NDA students met these requirements and were able to vote. Some felt strongly about their choice while others struggled to pick their favorite, but the votes are all counted and it's time to announce the school-wide winners . . .
In first place for the Star of the North Picture Book Award we have Moo!, written by Minnesota's own David LaRochelle. Belly Up took the top honors for the MHL Division I category and Cinder got the most votes for Division II. At the end of the month we'll find out which books from each category earned the statewide award and we'll get to see the nominees for the 2015-2016 school year. Stay tuned! Thanks to the wonderful work of our students, the Middle School Library is looking better and better. We now have the sixth graders' Book Talk Haikus on display, as well as the beginning of our rotating gallery of art created by sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Thank you to the families that donated frames to make the gallery possible! Soon to come will be some of the ALA Book Award informational posters designed by the fifth graders (others will be hung in the PK-5 Library). In the photo gallery below you can see groups of fifth graders presenting the award that they learned about to the class. I was impressed - these students are certainly getting to be polished presenters!
