As the pictures below suggest, this year's Scholastic Bookfair was a ton of fun! First, the strong sixth graders cleared out the Volunteer Room (Room 102) and then a whirlwind of awesome library volunteers moved in and transformed the space into a beautiful bookstore. We opened on the afternoon of January 22nd with enthusiastic parents and students enjoying the great selection of books and just closed up shop yesterday after our last classroom came through. Many, many books went home with students and many more were purchased by our teachers and by families for classroom and library donations. Thank you to all who shopped and to all who gave their time to make this year's Scholastic Bookfair a great success. Stay tuned to see some of the excellent new books we will purchase for the library with our earnings!

Last Friday evening, the Barnes & Noble in Edina was the place to be for NDA families, staff, and friends! Those who attended enjoyed wonderful music from Mr. Bestler and the Jazz Ensemble, entertaining book readings by teachers and students, book browsing, and time to catch up with old and new friends. Thank you all for your support of our school's library and your children's literacy development. I am so fortunate to be able to work in this dedicated community!
The Barnes and Noble Book Fair is coming up this Friday and I need to start thinking about what new books we will order with our book fair earnings. This is a big job, so again this year I am asking the 6th graders to help me out. Part of our library time this week will be dedicated to exploring the books recommended on book list and book review sites (such as those on this website's Great Links page). I'm particularly interested in suggestions for narrative non-fiction (this is non-fiction that reads more like a story) but fiction and informational non-fiction suggestions are welcome as well. Sixth graders and anyone else who would like to share a recommendation, please comment below. If you're wondering if we already have a particular book, please check our catalog before posting your comment. Thank you!
It has been a wonderful week in the Fireside Room! Last Friday, a great crew of volunteers set up our Catholic Schools Week Bookfair and the following five days flew by in a whirlwind of Bingo Blizzard shopping, classroom visits, and a rotating cast of even more volunteers. Thank you to all who helped and to all who shopped. Your support means more books for the school and classroom libraries, which translates into more enthusiasm for reading from our students. I sincerely appreciate that I am able to work at a school where students, parents, teachers, and administration show such a love for books and reading. Enjoy the photos below of our students shopping in assorted Catholic Schools Week fashions.
This week, members of the Student Council have been busy counting and packing books that were left over from NDA's Fall Used Book Sale. After the sale, Cece Golinvaux came to me to propose donating the books to Read Indeed, an organization with which she had volunteered before. This Minnesota-based non-profit literacy organization, started by 13 year-old Maria Keller, distributes books to kids in need near and far. Check out the Read Indeed website to find out more. Thank you to the members of Student Council and to Mrs. Golinvaux, who have given their time in service to NDA and Read Indeed!
Have you seen the New Books feature on the Home Page? I recently added this slide show to call attention to some of the beautiful new books we have received in the past couple of months. The books that we have added to the NDA collection this year have come from family and parishioner donations and from the funds raised at our Barnes and Noble Book Fair in the fall. We will have more new books coming in from Scholastic soon because of your generous patronage of the the Scholastic Bookfair. Thank you so much! Of course there are still more books out there that I'd love to make available to the students, so I'll continue to maintain the Wish List on the Friends page. I also appreciate the student and teacher suggestions for which books to add to the collection. Always feel free to tell me if you know about a great book or series that could be enjoyed by your friends at school. As you can see by the photos in the gallery below, NDA students had a lot of fun looking at books and finding good new reads to take home from our Scholastic Bookfair. Thank you to all of you who stopped in during Bingo Blizzard - What an exciting night! Despite the cold temperatures which threatened to derail our class visits, we were able to get all students through the fair during the school day the following week. This was only possible due to the patience and flexibility of the teachers and volunteers, so a huge thank you goes out to all of them! In the end, our sales were up over last year and many, many kids, teachers, and parents found new books to love. Leave a note in the comments if you'd like to share a good book that you found at the fair.
Thanks so much to all of you who braved the traffic last Friday night to join us at the Barnes and Noble Bookfair. The turnout was wonderful, the readers were terrific, and the band sounded great! It was a fun community event and a very successful fundraiser for the school. Online sales just closed today, so stay tuned for the total sales amount. NDA will receive 20% of the total to be put towards purchasing books for the library and classrooms. Thanks also to the many families who donated books to the library and classrooms. Students have already checked out many of the new titles!
