Thank you to Sammie and Quincy for giving us a gift on their birthdays! Sammie donated the crowd pleasing book, Dinosaurs Love Underpants, and Quincy donated a Jake Parker-illustrated book titled The Tooth Fairy Wars. We are sure that these books will be checked out often and enjoyed by many NDA students. Watch the blog for new birthday book arrivals in the future.

Yes, this very rare creature was spotted at NDA last Friday, thanks to the creativity of our students and visiting author/illustrator Jake Parker. Mr. Parker spent time with grades 1-3, grades 4-6, and with the preschoolers and kindergarteners. Each group had a chance to imagine some pretty fantastic hybrid creatures and to have books signed by our guest. Students also learned about the process of making picture books and graphic novels and about the essential elements of a story. Mr. Parker emphasized that the creative process is fun but that it also requires significant effort to produce high-quality creative work. According to Mrs. Dysart, the fifth graders were inspired: "When we got back to the classroom, they all just started to draw." Thank you Mr. Parker, for entertaining, educating, and inspiring our students!
I hope you all had a fun and relaxing summer and enjoyed many wonderful books. It has been great seeing the students back in the library! They have been enthusiastic about the many new titles on our shelves, thanks to a big order from Scholastic with our book fair earnings and to some generous donations (including many terrific additions from our own Mrs. Vance!). Check the Home Page to see some of the new books.
I am excited that I will be seeing the middle schoolers on a regular basis this year. This library time provides opportunities for them to develop their library and research skills (which become more and more important as they progress through the grades). We will also spend time discussing books and recommending, reviewing, and searching for great books to read. Much of what we do in the library will offer direct support for learning that is going on in other Middle School classes. Keep in mind that the donation of a library book is a meaningful way to honor a child's birthday. We will put a bookplate in the front of the book to recognize the birthday student and he or she will be able to present it to the class. Please see the Wish List on the Friends of the Library page or talk to me about your ideas. As always, please let me know if you have any questions! Mrs. Maguire |
