Last week, I set up time for the seventh graders to share their work with the third graders. Thank you to Mrs. Gross and Mr. Dopp for sharing their students and class time to make this experience possible!
Some of my favorite picture books are those that teach about the lives of real people. We have many of these in our library that are written for various age levels and that provide wonderful illustrations along with interesting stories. Below are cover pictures from just a few of these books: Several weeks ago, the seventh graders started off a biographical research project by selecting and reading one of these picture book biographies. They then further researched their subject and prepared a short slideshow to be shared with the third graders. The focus for this project was on navigating within and using the features of the Britannica School Middle encyclopedia (available through ELM4You.org) and on searching for online images that they would be free to use (not copyright-restricted). Seventh graders were expected to provide citations for each of their sources, including each of the images in their slideshow. This week the seventh and eight graders took a lesson from a dog (well, a small part of a lesson at least). It wasn't just any dog though. It was Ruff Ruffman, Humble Media Genius, and he knows a thing or two about how search engines work. He also happens to be a very talented dancer. Take a look at his video and then check out the infographic linked below for a more in-depth look at the workings behind search engines. You might also want to search YouTube to find out what else Ruff knows about media, technology, and dance moves.
Today marks the last day to check out books from the library, but we are still busy learning and having fun. Here's a little update on how we are finishing out the year:
Pre-K: We are reading books about growing - plants, animals, and people - oh my! Kindergarten: We started reading The Littles by John Peterson. Our goal is to NOT finish it by the end of the school year so you can get a copy from the public library and finish the best part at home together! 1st Grade: We started reading Doreen Cronin's comic mystery The Trouble with Chickens. Same plan as with kindergarten: You get to finish it at home! The Littles and The Trouble with Chickens are both great as introductory chapter books to share and both of these are series books so the fun can continue. 2nd Grade: The second graders have been busy with animal research. Ask them what a S.U.R.E. fact is! 3rd Grade: The past few sessions have been spent learning about effective searching, both with a search engine like Google and with our library catalog. We are finding that the right keywords make all the difference. Don't forget to search the Hennepin County Library catalog over the summer! 4th Grade: Fourth graders have been focused on digital citizenship. They are learning about this important concept in both Tech Lab and the Library. They have also done a bit of searching on the Library Catalog (see photos below) so they can find good books to read over the summer. 5th Grade: Poets and poems are the order of the day for fifth grade. They have been working with partners to research an American poet and one of his/her poems. On Wednesday they started presenting their poems and their findings to the class. Middle School: Ms. Hance and I are putting together a summer reading list for students starting 6th, 7th, & 8th grades in the fall. Never fear, there will be broad categories and plenty of choice! |
